When the General Post Office closed, the oldest building on the High Street stood empty. When Tom and Sam discovered it, the build was covered in layers of plasterboard and signage that represented the various iterations of the General Post Office throughout the decades. Layer by layer it was stripped back to the form of its architectural glory days: Signage from 1929, a bomb shelter, high ceilings, big windows. Tom and Sam were not long out of the Army but this exercise represented their biggest challenge yet. Over a six-month period they converted the building into the British Brasserie it is today, the sort of place they wanted to eat and drink in.

GPO shifts shape depending on the hour. At the oak bar you’ll find happy solo drinkers enjoy a pint, a glass of wine, an Old Fashioned, having a chat with the bartender. In the lounge someone reading the paper with their dog. Along the banquette couples dine and in the old sorting room a group play darts. Thursday morning the young professionals plug in and work undisturbed with a coffee. Steak Night follows. Friday night is busy, in a good way. Saturday a birthday party books out an area. Walk in on Sunday to find a family-friendly brunch is underway.

Sam runs the kitchen, Tom runs bookings and events. The team make it happen and look forward to seeing you.
